FROM SHRI C.B. SATPATHY'S MESSAGE
……“To
follow what Shri Sai prescribed as the Path could not
have been an easy task for any devotee unless Shri Sai
had by His personal conduct, spreading over sixty years
in Shirdi, proven that even in the present day world,
Divinity can be experienced directly. The method He prescribed
and practiced were: constantly attempt to efface ego,
follow the Master steadfastly, remember God always while
carrying on the duties of the mundane life, to be frugal
in living but lofty in thinking. Those of His devotees
who could follow Him in letter and in spirit, later turned
into noble souls whom posterity holds with the highest
adoration. Thus Dasganu, the police Head Constable became
Dasganu Maharaj, Kaka Saheb Dixit the famous Solicitor
of Bombay relinquished his worldly ambitions and worked
for Baba at Shirdi and was given spiritual evolution,
Kashinath Pandit became Upasani maharaj and a less educated
man like Nanasaheb Dabholkar wrote Babas’ life history
called “Shri Sai Satcharitra” in Marathi verse
and became a name which every Sai devotee knows.
When we see the Sai
movement, all over the world today, there emerges a clear
picture of a new pattern of ethical life in the Sai devotees,
individually and also in groups. Having visited hundreds
of temples of Baba in different parts of India and in
other countries like USA, Canada, UK, Australia etc. and
having met few lakhs of His devotees, I find that Sai’s
theme of brotherhood among the Sai devotees is a unique
feature. Shri Sai used to address many devotees as “Bhau”,
which in Marathi means brother. Thus He had given a clear
indication about the emergence of a Sai Brotherhood. In
the Dwarkamayee Masjid, He encouraged group singing of
Aarti (devotional songs), group worship, group dinning
and sharing of chillam (clay pipe) among different members
of the group.
Today the world is
passing through a period of transition. On the one hand
scientific and technological achievements of the human
race are going ahead at a rapid pace, but on the other
hand, such a progress is not bringing about happiness
and evolution of human values. As a result, racial, religious
and national conflicts are raising their ugly heads. Wars
and battle have never solved human problems. What brings
peace and continued prosperity is mutual tolerance, sacrifice
and love. The universal brotherhood of man can only be
achieved by understanding the spirit of god playing through
the human beings. Shri Sai Baba of Shirdi was the embodiment
of the Divine Spirit, which yet continues in the subtle
form. The only panacea to all the maladies we face lies
in ardently following the principles of the rich heritage
He has left. Let us pray to Him.
RESOLVE
We pray Shri Sai Baba
of Shirdi, Our Master to be with us and help us carry
on the rich legacy He had left for the generations to
come. Love, tolerance, mutual cooperation and complete
faith in the Master are the cardinal principles on which
this Heritage is built.”…….
Q & A
Was Shirdi
Sai Baba a Sadguru or an Avatar? Can you please explain?
Before one should
ask whether Shirdi Sai Baba is an Avatar or a Sadguru
one must know the difference between the two. A Sadguru
is one who dispels ignorance and lights wisdom and guides
the devotees towards the Path of God. An Avatar is one
(none else but God Himself) who descends in a human body
to uplift mankind. He can incarnate as a full Avatar that
is, with all the 16 kalas (sixteen types of powers) or
as a partial Avatar to establish Dharma (with a few kalas
out of this 16). I firmly believe that Shri Shirdi Sai
Baba is an Avatar of God. The Lord in His form has descended
in order to uplift mankind and re-establish dharma. He
always use to act as if He was just a fakir and a servant
of God but many a times in front of devotees when He was
in a spiritually ecstatic mood, He declared that He was
the Lord Himself. The qualities required to call Him an
Avatar are Omnipotence, Omnipresence and Omniscience.
He had full control over all the five elements (Panchatattwa).
We all know that He controlled the fire and rain as narrated
in chapter 11 of "Shri Sai Satcharitra", the
life story of Shri Sainath. It is seen that usually a
religion or path that is established by an Avatar goes
on expanding for hundreds of years ever after His Samadhi.
The phenomenal expansion of the Sai movement in India
and abroad is a clear indication about the spiritual status
of Shri Sai Baba of Shirdi.

FROM "LIFE OF SAI BABA" BY NARASIMHA SWAMI
……“Nanda
deepam or the perpetual lamp at the Lendi is now covered
by a pillar. But when he was maintaining it, it was only
a pit. There was nothing above to protect it, and on its
four sides 20 pieces of cloth were tied and the hole was
covered with a zinc sheet. Baba used to sit behind that
lamp and order him to fill up two pots with water and
place them near him.
Baba
would pour out water in various directions from those
pots. Why that was done, Abdul could not say, nor whether
any mantra accompanied the action. Except Abdul no one
else would be present when Baba scattered the water. Abdul
said, ‘Except myself, no other Mohammadan was reading
the Koran or any other holy book sitting by Baba's side’.
Baba
would occasionally utter sacred words, and all of them
were noted in that book. By Baba’s order or permission,
Abdul took them all down. It can now be read by either
Narasimhaswamiji or any other devotee. This script is
neither Devanagari nor Modi.
Abdul used this book not merely for daily reading but
also for prophecy. Abdul died in April 1954, and till
then, he was in the establishment of the Sai Sansthan.
Abdul had great faith in Baba, and would give udhi with
Baba's grace to many and help them in achieving their
objects such as cure of diseases.
As
he was for 66 years, either the bodyguard of Baba or the
attendant on his tomb, he is esteemed as the Hanuman of
Baba; constantly attending on the Guru, never expecting
any payment or reward, but simply out of faith sticking
on to his master. His was a noble example of complete
and perfect devotion and active service with the fullest
faith that is Nishta in the Guru.
He
had both Nishta and Saburi and Baba on occasions, told
him, ‘Arre, what are you going to have? You are
going to live in storeyed houses and terraced houses.
You will have a glorious time’. Abdul lived for
some time in Buty wada upstairs and he commanded the respect
of a very wide circle of Hindus and Muslims.
Baba used to give
Abdul excellent advice fitting him for a yogi’s
life. Baba told him, ‘Eat very little. Do not go
in for a variety of eatables. One sort of dish will suffice.
Do not sleep much’. Abdul followed this advice.
He kept awake all night, and in a kneeling posture kept
repeating his Koran, that is, Baba's words. He was meditating
on them.
Baba said, ‘Have
Dhyan on what is read and think Who am I’. This
might have been beyond the capacity of Abdul. One night,
he says, he was tired and tried to sleep, and held his
palms in front of him to rest his drowsy head. Baba then
said, ‘Are you trying to see the moon?’ That
night when he fell asleep, he fell upon Baba and his gaddi.
Baba gently stroked his feet, and then he awoke. The next
day when he took water in his palms and looked at it,
there was a big moon in that water. It was 2 p.m. This
was what Baba had spoken of.”……
DEVOTEE EXPERIENCE
Since
the year 1988, my family and I are the devotee of Sri
Sainath Maharaj. My sister-in-law is a follower of Sai
Baba since long and she introduced us to Baba. We love
Baba wholeheartedly. My family and children regularly
get Baba’s message, valuable lessons and advice
through Sai Baba’s serial on television every Sunday.
On many occasions Baba has saved us and brought peace
and smiles to members of our family.
On
one occasion in the month of October 1995, both our children,
daughter and son, were attacked by malignant malaria.
Although they were under treatment by a team of doctors
at Hospital at Haldia, West Bengal, their condition was
deteriorating. After a period of about a week, the doctors
proposed to shift them to Kolkata.
Deterioration
of their condition had put us into tremendous anxiety.
But we believe that Baba listened to our prayers. On the
day previous to our plan of leaving for Kolkata, another
doctor of the same hospital, (who was on leave during
the above problem), joined the duty. This doctor had excellent
experience and knowledge from his previously working at
Mathura hospital regarding handing the cases of malignant
malaria.
We
strongly believe that, due to our prayer to God Sai Baba,
the doctor came to our rescue. He applied doses of the
right medicine and due to his treatment, the condition
of both of my children started improving from that day.
Our children would not have been recovered had that doctor
not been there. It is Baba who had sent the Doctor and
saved the life of my children. Since then our belief on
Baba further strengthened.
Similarly,
Baba has given His blessings to my family in many occasions.
Recently I was passing though difficult times and needed
Baba’s mercy. I visited Shirdi on 19th and 20th
January 2008 for getting Baba's blessings. I prayed to
him and brought prasad, Baba’s photographs and CD
and cassettes of Baba’s Bhajans.
It
is true, that no one returns in empty hand from Shirdi
Sai Sansthan at Shirdi. Baba listened to my prayer and
solved my problem. After this, many personalities came
to my help, recognized me and my sincerity in work and
I was elevated by the organization to next higher position
just after one month of my visit to Shirdi. It has been
a great experience. Baba’s mercy and grace has been
with us, even in our most challenging times and we always
realized it.
We
are grateful to you Baba.

Chisel
!!!!
Dear
Baba,
I wish you make me a sharp
chisel in your hand,
And use me to sculpt happiness
in the people I meet,
They are your children and deserve your loving attention,
Use me to carve success for
the many people I come across
Answer their prayers through me and I shall selflessly
serve,
Use me to chip away the warts
on every human soul,
So that they can be moulded to be in your loving image,
Use me to chisel away the mountain
of ignorance in every man,
So that your compassionate rays can be seen clearly by
them,
Use me as a chisel to smoothen
the path for their deliverance,
So that they can walk to you with Divine rapture and Joy,
I know you will have to give
me a few knocks on my head,
Some of them soft, some of them hard, but knocks nevertheless,
But I know, I will always
want to be a Chisel for this Divine Purpose,
Because Baba, Hard knocks or soft, I shall always be in
your hands!

Sai Baba on YOGA
Yoga means “to
join”. The ultimate union of our soul with the God
is called Yoga. We all feel pain and a feeling of deep
inner loneliness because we have separated from our Source.
All Yoga aim at re-establishing our contact with our Source
“the Self”. The union cannot be achieved as
long as we are caught in the matrix of life and death
due to our Karma.
Union with the God/
Brahma / Supreme power implies that the soul has broken
free of the cycle of birth and death. The soul will not
have to take birth after birth to work out its karma.
We call it by name of Nirvana/ Moksha/ Salvation. Every
soul has to reach this level of perfection. It is said
that at this stage the soul gets enlightened and can recall
all its past, present and future. The soul can create
anything it wants. The soul becomes Spirit. It attains
the state of Existence-Knowledge-Bliss.
Some souls reach this state
in only a few births while some take hundreds of births
and still wonder what is the purpose of getting a human
birth. Shirdi Sai Baba often said that we get human body
as a result of our good karma so that we can work towards
our own salvation/ moksha/ nirvana. Every human being
has to take steps towards self realization and ultimately
God realization i.e., first to learn that he is soul and
not body. Ultimately realize and let his soul merge with
the Divine Holy Spirit (God).
We can come across someone
(Guru / Guide) who will remind us of the purpose of taking
human birth. However, the one, who has already achieved
self realization and God realization and strives to help
others to achieve the same is known as Sadguru (ascendant
master or Perfect Master). Shirdi Sai Baba is one such
Sadguru. He may not be physically visible to us anymore
but His holy spirit is still guiding and helping many
of His devotees towards self realization and God realization.
As per Hindu scriptures,
there are mainly four routes to reach this ultimate destination
Karma Yoga (Work), Jnana Yoga (Knowledge), Raja Yoga (Power)
and Bhakti Yoga (Devotion). Though during his lifetime,
Shirdi Sai Baba has thrown light on all forms of Yoga.
As per ancient Hindu
scriptures, consistent practice of either Love, Work,
Knowledge or Psychic control help us achieve Yoga. These
four routes that take us to our ultimate destination are
called Bhakti Yoga, Karma Yoga, Jnana Yoga and Raja Yoga
respectively. In the final stages all these routes overlap
with each other and become the same. Sai Baba was Yogasampanna
(full of Yoga). He has given practical demonstration of
all these Yogas by His conduct, action and preachings
during His physical lifetime on earth.
Shirdi Sai Baba has also given
discourses on all these Yoga practices to His devotees
as per their needs and qualifications. To be able to learn
and master any of these Yogas to reach our final destination
needs grace of God, which further depends on the qualification
of the receiver. A student of class fourth cannot be given
knowledge of class eighth. Baba would often say that people
keep asking him for worldly comforts but do not ask Him
to give them what He wanted them to give out of His full
treasury.
Bhakti Yoga: This is path of pure extreme
love and single minded devotion. The devotee (Bhakta)
places his trust in his ascendant master and loves Him
unconditionally thinking Him to be Brahma/ Universe. The
Master looks to the qualifications and preparedness of
the seeker, works on the mind, thoughts and feelings of
the devotee and gently but surely guides him towards path
of self realization.
Sai Baba had placed
such unconditional faith in his Guru and waited patiently
for His blessings. He advised His devotees to do the same.
Sai Baba maintained that though Bhakti Yoga (Yoga of Love)
is difficult but if one has a guide than this route becomes
the easiest path to follow.
The only condition
is that for treading this path the devotee has to surrender
himself completely (sarvasva sharanagati) to his deity
with firm belief that his Perfect Master will take him
safely across the worldly ocean existence. Sai Baba often
asked people to offer Him two pice of Shraddha and Saburi,
if devotee wanted Him to become their guide. Bookish knowledge
is for intellectual learning. For spiritual learning,
a capable Sadguru is needed who is pure love incarnate,
does not care for monetary benefit and is Himself Self-realized.
Shirdi Sai Baba was all this and more.
A Bhakti Yogi has to surrender
himself to his Sadguru, his personal God. Sai Baba once
told a devotee (who was following some other Guru) to
hold on to his own “bolster” and not leave
his Guru. Baba advocated that we should have faith in
our Sadguru, we should assimilate his teachings and follow
them with patience without any doubt. So many times Sai
Baba appeared as Ram, Krishna, Vithala, etc to His devotees
to confirm their faith in their respective personal Gods.
He sent Shama to Vani to fulfil his mother’s vow
made to their family’s personal God.
Karma Yoga:
A karma yogi has to perform all his activities with disinterest
and offer them to God. A karma yogi is detached and does
not yearn for worldly desires like wealth, progeny and
fame. A karma yogi lives to serve the world. Shirdi Sai
Baba gave a practical demonstration of being a perfect
Karma Yogi during His lifetime. He had no family, desires
or wants. He had pure love for humanity. He kept “Dhuni”
burning day and night. Every day he would go out for bhiksha
(mendicancy) round(s). He did not store money. He did
not care for expensive gifts offered to Him by His devotees.
He was dispassion incarnate and had no attachment with
anything of this world. He only cared for the welfare
of His devotees in every possible way He could. So many
times He took the pain /sufferings of His devotees’
for giving them relief. Many of His devotees got cured
by His blessings.
Sai Baba always looked after
the welfare of His devotees. Rich and poor were treated
similarly and once they surrendered themselves to Baba,
their problems became Baba’s problems. Sai Baba
took human form for the sake of His devotees, to serve
mankind and to sort out the differences between Hindus
and Muslims at that time.
The famous snake and frog story
rendered by Baba is a perfect example of how karma performed
with attachment brings about our downfall. Baba would
often say we get what is ours and we lose what does not
belong to us. Our karma determines what we deserve.
Sai Baba advised us to practice self restraint, be loving,
truthful, unselfish, develop good character, resist evil
thoughts.
Jnana Yoga: A rich
gentleman had visited Baba to get brahma gyana(secrets
of universe). Baba gave him an extensive intellectual
insight into Brahma and explained how and why it is difficult
to understand this knowledge. So many things are to be
surrendered for gaining knowledge of Brahma. This jnana
can only be given to those who have attained certain qualifications
to receive the same.
Further it requires
the grace of Guru/ God without which no knowledge can
be acquired. Jnana Yogi has a very highly developed “vivek”
and can easily distinguish between Real and Unreal “Maya/
Illusion”. Baba has explained about the working
of Maya to His devotees. Baba would often say that God
pervades everything. Only God is real, while the rest
is illusion.
Life would be easy
if we can understand this. Baba advised His devotees to
watch the show of their life as a bystander and detach
themselves so that they do not feel pain. Baba’s
most famous phrase “Sabka Malik Ek” is symbolic
of a Yogi who has realized universality of religion. A
jnani knows that at the highest levels of all religions
- all is one. Baba wanted the whole humanity to understand
this.
Raja Yoga:
This Yoga requires practice of psychic control, control
of inner unseen world. Visualisation of God /Universe
within through meditation etc. Sai Baba is “antaryami”.
Baba had full knowledge of inner and outer world of His
devotees. He could read the inner most thoughts and desires
of His devotees. He could manifest Himself at places other
than Shirdi. He identified Himself as one with other saints
and even proved it to so many of His devotes through many
such manifestations.
He could control
fire, rain and other natural phenomenon. Raja Yogi is
required to do some physical yogic exercises to keep the
body fit and Sai Baba excelled at such practices like
Khanda Yoga and Dhauti. Like a Raja Yogi he had control
over His food habits. His tongue knew no taste. He disapproved
of fasting and preached moderation in eating.
Baba’s teaching
regarding how He met His Guru who helped Him to introvert
His outgoing tendencies and made Him feel bliss supreme
is a perfect Raja Yoga practice. A Raja Yogi can control
natural elements like Baba could control the raging fire
or stop the storm. Baba knew deepest inner thoughts of
all and often said that wherever His devotee may be, He
is always with him and knows every action and thought
of His devotee. Though He would be seen mixing with all
His visitors, He remained in state of “Samadhi”
internally.
From all above it is clear
that non-attachment is the basis of all Yogas. The destination
of all the Yogas is the same, i.e., “union with
God”. So at one point all these Yoga practices start
overlapping with each other. Shirdi Sai Baba was a master
of all these Yogas - A perfect living example “of
how to put such divine knowledge to practice. He said
He was there to help and guide but people are more interested
in worldly desires. So many times He would fulfil an earnest
devotees’ worldly desires first, in order to bring
him on the path of Yoga later.
Like Hemadpant says it is very
difficult to comprehend the life of great Sadgurus like
Sai Baba. We can just imagine their greatness using our
limited intellectual bookish learning. One has to practice
and experience such yogic practices but that can be possible
if we come across someone who has himself united with
His Self. I am lucky, I found my Sadguru in Shirdi Sai
Baba. I pray to Him to work on me internally, change and
direct my thoughts in the right or positive direction.
Sai Baba help me choose my thoughts from the highest point
of love so that I can reach and merge with You.

TRUTH ULTIMATELY PREVAILS
DEVOTEES' FORUM
My
kids and their friends were arguing and I said "enough
boys, otherwise I will have to put an end to the fun and
you will be sad". The boys said, "do you know
why wars happen?" In my absent minded way I said,
"people want to make money so they wage wars".
Then the boys said no... "WAR happens when each one
thinks We Are Right." I was spell bounded for a moment.
They
are kids and yet they are so right. Baba Himself said
in Chapter 18/19 that "you ignorant fools leave off
all these fightings and arguments and live in peace".
The boys might have been taught this in their school.
I always wondered why can't we all be happy and peaceful.
Why do there have to be fights, misunderstandings, pain,
suffering, cheating. But little did I realise that I am
one of the contributors to the suffering in this world.
It
is ego that breeds arguments and it is ego that makes
us think we are always right. If there is difference of
opinion, then I would never say, so be it, and go my own
way. Maybe momentarily the person who raises the issue
might think he won, but that victory would be short lived,
because God always shows the right path, and truth always
prevails. Why do I not act like this? It is because of
my ego, and my urge to prove my point.
One
thing I have to ask myself and which I fail to do is "is
it worth wasting time to prove a point to somebody?”
If I loved them enough then I would let them win the argument
and see them happy. So the point is, I am wasting my time
and energy by releasing these emotions. I would have been
better off to divert this energy in thinking of Baba,
doing His work than end up in a useless argument which
made me lose my stability of mind and add to the misery.
Let us make a resolution, let us minimise arguments, and
let go of things. Let us try it for a short time, because
the sweet victory of controlling our emotions and ego
is greater than seeing somebody else win an argument.
Let
us test to see if refraining from arguments, and letting
go of issues would give us any happiness. May be we can
reconvene again in this forum and share our experiences
of what the situation was and how we were able to control
our urge to argue or prove a point and avert an uncomfortable
situation. Baba, please give us strength to be able to
hold back our tongue and not be involved in arguments.

I really admire the
website and the magazine on Baba. You really are spreading
a lot of insight on Him to benefit all and that is indeed
very commendable. Hope he always blesses you and your
loved ones forever and ever. I too am a follower of Baba
and feel is my best friend and I have total faith in Him.
When i go to meet him in Shirdi, all I do is look at him
peacefully and get back. I don’t believe in asking
Baba for anything, as he knows what we want and reads
our minds and thoughts way before even we realize.
