FROM SHRI C.B. SATPATHY'S MESSAGE
……“God
is generally perceived by people as the most benevolent,
powerful, permanent and an all pervading consciousness
who controls everything and everyone in the universe Past,
Present or Future. All philosophies and religions have
theorised that God is the greatest, kindest and perennial
giver of all sorts of happiness to His creation. He is
‘Ananda Murti’ or the repository of all and
eternal happiness.
It
is because of such attributes that God is called the Omniscient,
Omnipresent and Omnipotent Almighty and is highly apotheosized
in all religions with oriental or occidental hyperboles.
Leaving aside the spiritually evolved persons or the genuine
seekers, most of the devotees when praying God nurture
a secret expectation in their conscious or subconscious
minds that their prayers will somehow draw kindness, help
and happiness from God.
Happiness herein means a solution to those material or
psychological aspects of life that create problems. One
who in his prayers seeks a solution to his personal problems
alone cannot be called a true seeker in the spiritual
path. A genuine seeker in the path towards God cannot
expect pleasurable or desirable events only. He has to
experience and bear both pleasurable (so called good)
and painful (so called evil) experiences with equanimity
visualising God’s divine role in both.
It
is not in the scheme of things of God the Almighty, or
the law of nature through which God operates, only to
give pleasurable experiences to all life forms including
human beings. If God is only ‘good’ then where
does the so called ‘evil’ emanate from? If
good is opposed to evil, then there has to be some other
powerful entity who must be equal and opposite to the
benevolent God in its evil capabilities.
But
if God alone is the giver of both the good and evil experiences,
then there cannot be a separate entity called ‘Satan’
or ‘Shaitan’ beyond His overall scheme in
the management of the universe. In Hinduism there is a
concept of Devatas (Positive forces of nature) and Rakhasas
(negative forces of nature). But Hindu mythology again
explains that these powerful negative forces called Rakhasas
or Asuras used to draw their power only from God.
There
are numerous instances of Lord Brahma, Vishnoo or Shiva
empowering these Rakhasas through their blessings. Therefore,
these Rakhasas or negative forces of nature have a specific
and important role in the overall scheme of God. Hence
good and evil forces and experiences are necessary concomitants
to each other just like light and darkness. Neither can
exist alone.
Every
good event or good action contains an aspect of evil in
it and every evil contains an aspect of good howsoever
small it may be. Thus there cannot be something called
pure good or pure evil. These qualities of good and evil
as symbolised as Devatas and Rakhasas respectively, are
inbuilt into the very fabric of human nature. These two
attributes of a human being, when in interaction with
the same or similar attributes of other human beings and
of the overall nature around, create a conflict between
the opposing forces.
To
the ordinary mind, such conflicts are perceived as human
problems. Given the Dialectic Theory of nature, without
such an interaction of two opposing forces nothing can
be created. If water and fire elements were not predominantly
existent on earth, no life form would have been possible.
An understanding and acceptance of the play of two such
equally opposite forces in one’s material, mental
or spiritual life is a ‘sine-qua-non’ to spiritual
evolution. Both are necessary correlates in the divine
matrix. Without such an understanding it is difficult,
nay, impossible to progress in the path of spiritual evolution.
Through
religious and spiritual practices one can reinforce and
enhance the positive qualities in oneself. Such practices,
however, do not destroy the evil qualities but keep them
in a dormant state. Hence, one cannot reject the evil
qualities in oneself or in others but accept them as an
aspect of nature or God.
A
worldly man cannot either run away from the world or from
the evil but can try to contain or minimize the negative
compulsions it creates in mind. Through religious or spiritual
practices, so long as the divine qualities are kept at
a higher level, the evil qualities remain subdued and
silent. But when a person strays away from his religious
path, some of the evil qualities do raise their head,
even if he has some good qualities.
Therefore,
to expect that through prayers or other religious practices
one would get only material or mental pleasures by divine
intervention is a fallacy. Since the very plinth of acceptance
of God only as a pleasure giving entity is defective,
most people suffer more due to such conceptual inadequacies
than due to the evil qualities of others. The nature,
intensity and possibilities of the negative or positive
thoughts can only be understood by conscious observation
and analysis of one’s own thoughts. However, most
of the people do not find it necessary or possible due
to their total involvement in the day to day worldly affairs.
Those devotees,
who achieved God realization, were the ones who had gone
beyond the conflict of good - evil and pleasure - pain
through strenuous and long drawn mental practices as prescribed
by their Spiritual Master. They were the real spiritual
seekers.".........
FROM "LIFE OF SAI BABA" BY NARASIMHA SWAMI
……“
Purandhare was anxious always to be with his object of
love. That is the characteristic of love. So, he tried
to go to Shirdi as often as possible. Baba objected to
that and told him that he need not go to Shirdi so often.
Baba told him to work in company with H. S. Dixit, and
the two generally went together. Dixit was at the top
of the ladder, rich, influential, famous, highly learned
and commanding respect from everyone. Purandhare was the
exact opposite of all this and yet Purandhare in his anxiety,
would try to go along with Dixit every time the latter
went.
This
of course exposed him to some risks on some occasions.
Baba detained him at Shirdi far beyond the extent of his
leave. On one such occasion, the Foreman of his office
asked him for an explanation and threatened him. Purandhare's
defiant reply was, ‘Here is my resignation. Take
it’. Purandhare was so sensitive. His superior Mr.
Wilson knew all about his relations with Baba and asked
him where he was overstaying his leave. Purandhare’s
answer was, ‘With Baba’. Wilson knew at once
that without Baba’s permission neither Purandhare
nor anybody else should leave Shirdi and so he tore up
his resignation and told the Foreman that Purandhare was
not his subordinate, much to the chagrin of that Foreman.
On
one occasion, Purandhare was anxious to run to. Shirdi.
But during the night Baba appeared in a dream and told
him, 'Beware, if you come I will hit you. Do not come.
Why should you come so often; I am not away from you.
I am with you. Do not play the fool'. He was wondering
why Baba forbade his visit. But he obeyed the order.
The
next morning there was a strike among the labourers in
his mill, and he discovered that Baba was right for, had
he gone away, the superior officials would think that
Purandhare was at the bottom of the strike and had got
away to hide the fact. But as he remained at the station,
he was not suspected and he was obviously innocent of
any sympathy with the strikers. Instances of this sort
in which Baba conveyed advice and warning are too numerous
to be fully described. They all tended to confirm Purandhare’s
idea that his living God was this Shirdi Baba and that
he was perfectly safe in following his advice and directions.".....
DEVOTEE EXPERIENCE
In
the year 2002 I suddenly fell very ill. I was a high B.P.
patient for ten years and was taking treatment and was
careful with diet and was active. I was under stress as
I was handling a lot of activities and domestic chores
at the same time. One day I was bedridden with high B.P.
and high blood sugar and heart trouble. Being a doctor
myself I could make out I was very ill. My physician put
me on medication and bed rest and special diet.
Somehow
I was not hospitalized inspite of being breathless even
when I was on bed rest. My close relatives left to attend
a marriage; my husband was busy with his office work;
my daughter-in-law and my daughter were young and inexperienced
to do much. Still they did whatever they could to make
me comfortable.
I
thought I was going to die and prayed to Sai Baba that
I wanted to live and see grandchildren and get my daughter
married. She was going abroad and my husband and I were
to accompany her a fortnight later and there was I bedridden.
My son too had joined a company and was too busy to see
me often. I was depressed and worried.
At
such a time, miraculously I was taken care of by a good
cardiologist and put on the correct medication and my
condition stabilized though I was still uncomfortable.
My daughter-in-law saw that I got the right diet like
boiled vegetables etc. and took care of me. My daughter
managed to get things for her trip abroad although she
was worried about me.
A
few days before my trip with her I did not want to travel
abroad as I had a syncopal attack when I was shopping.
I was taken home and my cardiologist advised on phone
what to do. I asked my husband to cancel my ticket and
he could go abroad with my daughter and help get her settled
there for her studies and return. However, he insisted
that I accompany them and I went.
When
I look back I think that only Shri Shirdi Sai gave me
the courage and the strength to manage the flight and
also the time I spent there before returning to India.
Following that I had no choice but to attend the marriage
of my niece in a small city far away. The train journey
and the travel by car were uncomfortable for a sick person.
But I survived and returned home safely.
After
that I slowly recovered. During this time I had taken
a new job in an NGO, which I resumed. I also joined a
course in reflexology and I did my third degree in reiki
course. All this kept my mind busy and helped me forget
my general weakness etc. The amazing thing in all this
is that though I was ill, I had tremendous faith in Shirdi
Sai Baba and he helped me every moment, every day.
Just
before this illness a very dear friend gave me a statue
of Saibaba from Shirdi. Then I got a statue after that
from my brother-in-law after I was better. I also had
a statue I had got earlier. It was as if Shirdi Sai Baba
was protecting me during this time span between getting
the two statues. It took a long time before I got stronger
but the dangerous time was over. I visit Baba's temple
on Thursdays and read Sai Satcharitra and my life revolves
round Sai Baba.
I still have to get my daughter married to a suitable
boy who will look after her and she will look after him.
I have a wonderful 3 and 1/2year old grandson and who
calls me Dadimaa so lovingly. My daughter-in-law is expecting
her second baby in January. There is improvement in family
relationships and everyone is loving and kind. I have
some financial and property problems which I am sure Sai
Baba will solve for me. He is my God, friend, parent,
doctor, everything rolled in one. Om Sairam Kripa. Thanks
dear Sai Baba for everything.

POEM
There
Was a Time
There was a time, not too long ago, when I proudly thought
with a pretentious prayer, that I was a Good Disciple of
Baba
and all of a sudden, He sent me a Test,
and I did not pass, and my Bubble burst!
I
then read many a religious book and studiously
the lessons and preaching’s of great Saints
And again I thought I was a worthy Disciple of Baba
And again a test He sent, in the midst of my material
peace
And again I did not pass, and my new Bubble burst!
Restlessly,
I then went to famous Temples and Mosques
and in my quest, met many a religious Saint
And I improved I thought, to be Baba’s worthy Disciple
And as usual, He sent me another test
and history repeated itself. I failed!
Of what
use I thought, in a pensive mood,
is reading books and Divine Preaching’s
of what use is my going to Temples and Mosques
and meeting many a religious Saint
if a test by Baba I cannot pass?
And then
one day, while I was praying
In the puja room, it struck me quite clearly that
It is not enough to go to Temples and Mosques
To read books and spiritual teachings
To meet Saints and listen to discourses…
All you
need to do is to live according to Baba’s laws
And to chant his name with love and devotion, as
given so simply in Sai Satcharita to follow.
And guided by Him, you will be on the right path, surely
and all the tests you will happily take and pass, and
truly
you can say, you are a worthy Disciple of Baba!

TOPIC OF DISCUSSION
Need
for Pooja and Prayer
The
dynamics of life, and growing uncertainties are the biggest
roadblock to the achievements of a man. It is this fear
of unknown that a man faces is a blessing in disguise.
Wonder how that is so? Failures due to unforeseen circumstances
keep a man humble, teach lessons of humility and show
man that he is mortal and however technologically advanced
and intellectually capable he might be, it is the invincible
power of destiny, law of nature that controls the fate
and future of Man.
It is only in the face of uncertainties, failures and
greatest desire for the goal that instills a fear, a fear
of failure in man. It is then that man acknowledges the
presence of a supreme power namely “God” who
has the ability and power to right the wrong and make
the impossible, possible. It is during this time that
man turns to God and communicates with the supreme. This
communication is called prayer.
Paul
Brunton in his book “ A search in secret India”
quotes 'Sri Mahasaya' about need for prayer as - “Prayer
is the last resort. It is the ultimate resource left to
man. Prayer will help a man where intellect may fail.”
Man turns to prayers when he loses confidence in his intellectual
capacity, physical skills and abilities. He goes out seeking
ways to fulfill his dreams. When all efforts fail he then
resorts to prayers.
One
has reservations of communicating their inner most thoughts,
ambitions and desires to fellow humans. There is this
fear of being ridiculed for misplaced and unrealistic
aspirations or wants. But when it comes to communion with
God, there is no fear at all that his ideas, desires or
wishes will be laughed at. It is an open relationship
between a father and a child, where the father entertains
every wish and thought of the child. It is the belief
that God listens to us at any time that turns a man towards
prayers.
Prayers
creates forces of positive energy around us. Prayers also
keep away the bad thoughts and vibrations. One example
of this is Baba’s explanation about Rohila’s
cries of “Allah O Akbar” which kept poor farmers
awake in Shirdi “that the Rohilla had got a very
bad wife, a Zantippi, who tried to come in and trouble
the Rohilla and Himself; but hearing the Rohilla’s
prayers, she dare not enter and they were at peace and
happy. In fact, the Rohilla had no wife and by his wife
Baba meant Durbuddhi, i.e. bad thoughts. As Baba liked
prayers and cries to God better than anything else, He
took the side of the Rohilla, and asked the villagers
to wait and suffer the nuisance, which would abate in
due course.” (chapter 3 Shri Sai Satcharitra)
Baba,
in Sai Satcharita, has emphasised the importance of prayers
and repetition of God’s name. He asked people to
read various scriptures. Baba showed the importance of
reading Vishnu Sahasranam by bestowing it on Shyama. Group
prayers or Satsanga, have the power to cure the ailing,
find a job, a life partner and give hope to the hopeless.
Prayers when filled with longing and love seemed to be
heard faster, because God hungers for love too. An instance
can be taken from Mahabaratha where Lord Sri Krishna runs
to rescue of Draupadi when she calls out to Him in complete
surrender when being insulted in court.
A sincere cry never goes unheard, the outcome might not
be as we want it but it is always in our favour, for God
knows what is best for us. Even to this day God runs to
us and it is due to His grace, that our problems are solved
and difficulties removed. Only those who have implicit
faith and are sincere in their love towards God will experience
His constant guidance in life.
This conditions seekers of God to love and think of Him
often as they have uncovered the secret treasure of finding
solutions to their problems. Prayers are therapeutic,
not just spiritually, but mentally and emotionally as
well. When we remove and isolate ourselves from the surroundings
and pray in solitude our anger subsides, our understanding
of the situation increases, we learn to forgive, our love
towards others increases and we manage to see the problem
in a new light and it may not seem to be a problem any
more.
Praying
does not mean sitting in front of God for hours together
ignoring the external world. Those who engage in serving
others are dearer to God rather than those who escape
responsibilities and spend hours praying in front of pictures
and statues. A few minutes (5 to 10 minutes) a day is
enough to recharge our spiritual and mental thirst in
solitude initially.
Gradually
one can tune their mind towards God while working or discharging
their duties. The name of God comes to their mind and
lips as easily as one breath. Such people are not influenced
by traumatic situations. They are in constant state of
happiness and are at peace filled with knowledge that
God will take care of everything at the right time. All
that is needed is to have firm faith and patience.
Let us pray to God and light up lamps of love and faith.
Let us ask Him to forgive our sins; lead us not to temptations
but to deliver us from evil and help us to focus on the
path leading towards Him.

Baba helps
actively and actually. Once you have surrendered to Him
He takes care, reduces pain and increases happiness and
evolves the souls. Keep His teachings and life history
in mind. See Him in happiness and unhappiness both. See
Him in mundane and spiritual both. Allow Him to work on
you by keeping Him always in your heart.
