FROM SHRI C.B. SATPATHY'S MESSAGE
……“The greater miracles
of Baba are instances of control of natural forces like
fire, air and water (rain). The Satcharitra narrates of
an evening when torrential rain accompanied by lightning
and thunderstorm hit Shirdi flooding it entirely. This
terrified all the disciples, animals and birds who took
refuge at Dwarakamai Masjid and prayed for help.
At their request Baba
commanded the cloud in a thunderous voice to stop its
fury and to allow his children to go their houses. Within
minutes the rain stopped and the storm settled down. Another
instance documented was on an afternoon when flames from
Baba’s dhuni rose up to the roof of Dwarakamai Masjid
threatening to burn it. Baba took his satka (stick) and
hit a pillar commanding the fire to calm down. At each
stroke of the satka the flames gradually settled to normalcy.
Baba gave numerous other
types of experiences to his devotees but it would not
be possible to codify or cite such examples due to lack
of space. The more surprising and interesting fact to
note is that even after departure from his bodily abode
in 1918 and till the present day, devotees continue to
report similar experiences. Truly speaking, even on the
day Baba left his body and thereafter, devotees have been
experiencing such unexplainable events. Such experiences
of Baba are not limited to the gullible and uneducated
rural youth as is commonly believed to be, but cuts across
the “intelligentsia” of the society including
lawyers, professors, officials, doctors, scientists and
others.
It is interesting to
observe that even in this era of esoteric, atomic individualism,
with population (the number of devotees) having increased
manifold, where rationality and objectivity rules the
minds of the people, such spiritual experiences continue
to affect millions. Cutting across the man made differentiations
of caste, races, religions, socio-economic diversities,
all are making a beeline to Baba’s Samadhi at Shirdi
as Baba had once uttered in a state of spiritual ecstasy.
Despite the modern day
youth’s affinity to western culture, Baba’s
message remains ever relevant and appealing. That is why
so many temples have come up across the globe. Sai Baba
not only crossed the boundaries of humanism but gave shelter
to all living creatures. The Sai Satcharitra narrates
numerous instances of his compassion towards dogs, snakes,
horses, tigers and even birds.
Today on an average 35,000 people visit Shirdi every day
and on weekends the numbers go upto a lakh or more. There
has been a phenomenal growth in the Sai faith as can be
seen in the astronomical growth in the number of temples,
literary publications, devotional music etc. The number
of devotees dedicated to spread the name and message of
Shri Shirdi Sai Baba is mind-boggling.
Today the Sai movement
is not limited only to Maharashtra as was during the time
of Baba, but within decades of his departure has crossed
the national boundaries to become a global movement. This
new era of “Saiism” does not touch the religious
aspect of the devotee’s life only but affects and
permeates all aspects of an individual’s life (family,
culture, social behavior etc). For the devotees Shri Sai
Baba is not a part of their life but their life itself
in all its aspects.
The spirit of Sai
is more active and alive today than perhaps it ever was.
This raises in our mind a fundamental question - “Who
is Sai Baba?” Some address him as a Sadguru, some
as a fakir, some as a Yogiraj, some as a saint and to
most of the devotees he is “God the Almighty”
Himself.
He has been accepted
as an incarnation (Saguna Sakara avatara), which means,
God who in human form walked on earth. History has shown
that the expansion of religions and/or faiths started
by the incarnations expanded phenomenally after they left
their human embodiment. This was the case with Jesus Christ,
Buddha, Mohammed and Shri Krishna.
The Sai movement is
ever on the increase in a similar manner, which goes to
reinforce the faith that Sai Baba was an incarnation of
God (Paramatma). This goes to prove Baba’s promise
that after leaving his body he will be ever active from
his tomb to protect and guide his devotees. As Baba had
once promised, He continues to exist in a subtle form
(Mahakarana sheath) as a unifying force, to spread and
re-establish compassion, love, truth and tolerance amongst
human beings and among all living entities on earth.
Let us welcome and embrace this age of Sai, who is the
panacea for all the evils of the present world, torn asunder
by forces of regionalism, racialism, economic and social
differences, religious bigotry, fanaticism and lack of
faith in “God”. Let us look forward to a happier
tomorrow; let the name of Shri Sai resonate in all corners
of the globe.”…….
FROM "LIFE OF SAI BABA" BY NARASIMHA SWAMI
……“In Damodar Rasane'
s case, he was more fortunate. He had heard of Sai Baba
and went up to meet him. Sai Baba had kept apart 8 mangoes
to be given to him from a basket of mangoes that were
sent to Baba. The children were the recipients of the
rest of the mangoes and some children wanted more. When
Baba said, 'There is nothing,' the children pointed to
the eight mangoes. Baba said, 'They are for Damia.' But
the children said, 'Damia is not here'. 'I know that.
He is on the way. He
is coming', said Baba. Then, when Baba went out, some
of these petted children of Baba stole away four mangoes,
and when Rasane came, there were only four mangoes remaining.
As soon as he came, Baba gave him those four mangoes.
'Eat and die. People are clamouring for mangoes.' Eat
and die-Damodar was perturbed by hearing the inauspicious
word die, and Mahlsap, athy noting his perplexity told
him that it was a blessing to die at the feet of Baba.
Baba was enjoying the
humour all the time, as the word die, which he had used,
did not refer to the physical death but only to the spiritual
death, which is the same as Bhramh or Pramada coming upon
one who gets deeper and deeper in samasaric life with
the birth of a child after child and the death of several
of them.
Pramada a
Marityuraham bravimi
that is, It is the intoxication of the world that makes
us forget the Real Life; that I call death said Sanatkumara
- Sanat Sujatiya.
Baba came to the rescue
and said, 'Damia do not eat these fruits yourself. Give
them to your wife.' Damia wanted to know to which wife
were the fruits to be given. Baba said, 'The second wife.'
Baba also said, 'She will have eight children. The first
and second would be boys. Name the first Daulat Shah and
the second Thana Shah.' Taking up his note book immediately,
Damia wrote down the names.
Then the fruits were
taken and given to his second wife, and, unlike the heroine
of the Bhagavata Mahatmya, she did eat the four fruits.
She begot, as stated by Baba, exactly eight children,
one after another, their sexes being in the order given
by Baba. It took fifteen years for all the children to
be born. Therefore, it was clear that the planetary influence
in Damia's case was not quite as deadly as that in the
Bhagavata case. Perhaps there is an astrological explanation
also.
There, in the written
horoscope, at Damia's birth there was no Guru balam to
overcome the papi's influence. But the All-knowing and-All
powerful Guru of Damia was Baba, and his balam was there
in 1897, and his Baba's veekshanyam could overcome all
the adverse influences of all the planets put together.
As Sri Thyagaraja says,
Griha Balam
Emi?
Sri Ramanugaraga Balame Balamu.
It may be noted teat
of the eight mangoes representing eight children that
Baba set apart for Damia, four were stolen away. Corresponding
to that loss, of the eight children that were born to
Damia, four were filched away by Yama. The remaining four
are living now, healthy, strong and flourishing.
The first named Daulat
Shah is now known as Nana Saheb Rasane and is a trustee
of the Sai Sansthan. Daulat means prosperity and fame.
With the wealth already acquired by Damia, the children
started or carried on a successful business, and they
are keeping up the name of Damia for wealth and generosity.
In addition to the above, Nana Saheb, the eldest son,
was helped by Baba in his spiritual development. He is
now carrying on Sai propaganda, spreading the Sai faith
by lectures, etc., and is fully deserving of the name,
Daulat Shah. When Daulat Saheb was five years old, and
when he first began writing the letters Hari on the slate,
Baba held his hand and helped him to write.”……
DEVOTEE EXPERIENCE
I was suffering from
deception, material losses, betrayal and physical assault.
The expected outcome was depression, very high sugar levels
and severe diabetic condition with a reading of 460-75.
I suffered because that was karmic. My secretary even
presented me with Sai Satcharita - but my sanskaras perhaps
prevented me from reading it. But His grace and blessings
had to lead me to it. Finally when the situation became
desperate with court cases and police stations, losing
properties in the court and I was left without even a
house to stay in, I took shelter in a government quarter.
Then one day a friend
suggested that I visit the Sai temple and read Satcharita.
I read it in a saptaah. Then I read it in one day. Then
someone suggested I read Gurucharita. I read that too.
Each story and chapter was a revealing lesson to me. I
learnt a lot. Meanwhile, my health improved.
Earlier I could not
walk and found it very painful to stand up after squatting
for a while. I was detected with cancer in both breasts.
I did parikramas. The next scan projected an arrest -
status quo. My health improved. My daughter secured a
seat in medical school. I received the promotion that
was denied to me for 23 years. One of my research articles
caught the attention of the Prime Minister’s staff
and I received appreciation.
Even now I get depressed because
the forces that are creating difficulties are so many,
but I chant the name of Sai - consciously and sub-consciously
every waking minute of the day. He has finally, after
testing me for years, willed so much progress in a span
of three years. He will right every wrong done to me by
fellow men and women. I have found the beauty of his omnipresence
even in China - when I wondered when I can see a champa
flower. When I returned - the first Thursday after I returned,
the priest at the temple gave me a champa flower from
His lotus feet. He is there when I seek Him. Without Him
I would have perished.
My only worry - this
morning in chapter 16 of Sri Gurucharitra, I have read
about the duties of a woman. I see that only women have
responsibilities and duties. Men do not. No matter what
husbands may do wives must tolerate and have forbearance
and patience. I have been married for 24 years. From day
one I was exploited, abused, taunted, maligned, and beaten
up. I had to bring up my two children with little or no
support from my husband. He has neglected the children
too. I have never neglected my duties as a daughter in
law.
They were my responsibility
and I served them with pleasure. I cannot even repeat
some of the things said to me. I have paid up his debts.
All this is possible by Sai's Grace. But as a mortal I
always craved for a little concern - some affection -
it has never come through. I am working and therefore
financially not on the road. But in similar situations,
women who are not educated, not employed, have to find
other ways.
Why should they not
remarry so someone better can take care of them? I know
shaastras say something different. They were written when
the world was not so materially oriented. Now everything
is money based. So employment is important. If the husband
cannot support should the wife commit suicide? What about
the children? I feel strongly that some system be evolved
to make life more secure for women and children and old
parents.
Some of my doubts
and questions are answered soon and some after a long
time. But no query goes unanswered. I am developing more
and more faith in Baba. I am sure He is The One!

POEM
Make me free
Baba,
with kafni, a cap, and a sparkling face looked so fine,
He came to Shirdi with a purpose which was so very divine.
Jealous I am of the land, the soil and the grass of Shirdi,
Which were blessed by kissing the Feet of a Sadguru so
divine.
The power of the Fakir
to many, was not really known;
Till with water He lit the daily lamps which brightly
shone.
A flower garden He did water daily with tender loving
care,
Symbolic of the brotherly love He wanted to share.
A chillim passed around
was blessed by the touch of His lip,
But the people of Shirdi were more fortunate to be in
His grip.
Oh, so envious am I hearing about those wonderful days,
But I am sure those days will return if everyone prays.
I now do look with
anticipation under every neem tree,
Hoping to find Baba with a cap, a kafni and
a sparkling face to make me free.

TOPIC OF DISCUSSION
Prarabdh
Soul
- A soul has to take on a body made up of five tatwas
to come to this earth. It is said that soul has to take
birth to learn and to experience each and every aspect
of human emotion without forgetting its original state
i.e, purity, love and bliss.
It is through this
human life that a soul can finally merge with the holy
divine Paramatma from which it was separated millions
of years ago. In every birth, the soul strives to reach
perfection so that it can get enlightened and become aware
of the truth about oneness of the universe i.e., ALL IS
ONE. All souls are a tiny part of that Supreme Divine
Power thereby implying that all souls have that tiny spark
of Supreme Spirit within. However, after taking human
birth, in ignorance, the soul cannot recall its original
state, gets entangled in earthly enjoyments and forgets
its mission of self realization and subsequently the God
realization.
Karma
- In its human form the soul cannot sit idle. It creates
various karmas in the process of living, becomes attached
to materialism over and above spiritualism. Whether the
karma is ‘good’ or ‘bad’, it is
immaterial. The universal law takes note of all the actions
a soul performs to carry out its earthly existence. It
is said that all such karmas accumulate and become Sanchit
Karma.
It is said that all
our karmas are recorded and stored in our Akashic records.
A soul cannot merge with the spirit unless it has worked
out the cause and effect of its Karma because universal
law functions flawlessly and impartially. When the soul
is reborn again, it brings with it some portion out of
this Sanchit karma to work out in the present birth. This
portion of karma is called Prarabdh. It is said that seventy
five percent life of a soul is preordained and a soul
has no say in it. Soul has to bear it whether it brings
worldly happiness or worldly sadness. For the balance
twenty five percent of life the soul can use its God given
freewill which creates Kriyaman Karma. These kriyaman
karma also result in accumulating more Sanchit karma.
Prarabdh - Outcome of Prarabdh are those happenings in
the souls earthly life, which happen without any or little
effort. Soul feels happy when it gains materialistic comforts,
pleasures and position in life but it gets totally baffled
when it loses the very same possessions unexpectedly,
without any explainable reason. Soul does not realize
that this is the fruit or effect of the cause of its Prarabdh
in this lifetime. For example, we find a good human being
doing all the best for the world but yet suffering from
a deadly disease, a selfish person getting success in
almost any activity it undertakes. All this is happening
due to Prarabdh of these souls
Imagine how it could
be when different souls come together in a lifetime and
form a family. Each soul has its own Prarabdh and its
own individual journey. But universal law is perfect.
It arranges the soul groups so effectively that one soul’s
Prarabdh matches with the Prarabdh of other souls. Thus
souls living in a family life not only perform their respective
earthly duties but also work out their Prarabdh together.
This way they keep
coming back on earth again and again, learn their lessons
and help each other to work out their balance karmas till
their last earthly desires has been fulfilled. The soul
discards its human body once its Prarabdh of current lifetime
is worked out completely. However, Maya plays such a strong
role that it takes ages for an ignorant soul to work out
all its karma and realize that the Supreme Divine Power
is nowhere else but within.
How to work out Karma
- The biggest question is how can the effect of Karmas
be effaced? Man's actions or karmas are the manifestations
of his thoughts. Karma is any action, thought, feeling,
emotion generated by mind of a Man. The mind, by projecting
thoughts to sense-organs, enjoys pleasures. It, more or
less, identifies itself with these thoughts and pleasures.
At that time, it does
not think of anything else. Actually, the earthly thoughts
and impulses should be converted into the zeal for securing
internal bliss and happiness after attaining a perfect
balance between materialism and spiritualism. In simple
terms, soul must perform duties as required to be performed
in its earthly lifetime with a sense of detachment i.e,
without feeling sad about losses and without feeling elated
about gains. But then it is easier said than done.
Meditation - Meditation
is one way for the soul to connect to the higher self.
In Sai Satcharita, readers have been advised to look inwards.
The soul should find a quiet place, close eyes and meditate.
The purpose is to withdraw all the five senses inwards,
make them inactive because these senses have been given
to the soul to see, hear, taste, touch and enjoy the external
world only. The practice of meditation in solitude consists
in reverting and raising the internal spark of the soul,
to try to reach the higher self.
It is said that the
seat of that spark is at midpoint behind the eyes called
Third Eye or Krishna Consciousness. When such a condition
begins to supervene to some extent, as a result of performing
the meditation practices, the working of Karmas, both
internally and externally, is automatically enfeebled.
On getting some bliss and joy internally, and on witnessing
the love, grace and mercy of the Supreme Being, the meditator’s
mind, is of itself, detached from the world and its pleasures.
The pleasures of the world become insipid. The situation
is the same. However its effect on the meditator’s
mind changes. The soul finds peace in all the situations
it finds itself in - whether good or bad - it does not
matter any more.
After this, the longing for
progress in meditation, and higher and higher bliss, goes
on increasing. Worldly desires are curtailed. The soul
always gives priority to the will, grace and mercy of
the Supreme Being in whatever he does. It subordinates
its desires to the will of the Supreme Being. Thus the
soul is entangled in Kriyaman Karmas very little or not
at all. This cuts short the chain of its Karmas.
Prarabdh Karmas, which are
unfolding in this very life will be very much mitigated
by the grace and mercy of the Divine Spirit. This way
the soul is able to withdraw from the eyes, it goes on
getting detached from the body and the world. In the wakeful
state, the seat of the spirit is behind the eyes. It is
here that pains and pleasures are felt and Karmas are
performed. Therefore, as the spark of soul is withdrawn
from here with the help of spiritual exercises, pains
and pleasures cease to be felt. In this way, the effect
of Prarabdh Karmas is lightened.
As to the Sanchit Karmas, that
are stored in Akashic records (mind-sky) in the form of
seed-impressions. They will fructify in a future life.
As the soul penetrates these records in its ascent to
higher regions, the Sanchit Karmas appear in the form
of thoughts and impulses. They come into play for a short
while only and are obliterated and finally the Sanchit
karma are also cleared.
If one has the grace of Sadguru,
it will not take long for a soul to achieve the desired
results. In Sai Satcharita, where Sai Baba has translated
the Sanskrit shloka for Nanasaheb, this thing has been
brought out very beautifully. At another place it has
been beautifully explained how with Guru’s grace,
the soul realizes that the meditator and the object of
meditation all are ONE.
Bhakti - As per Sai
Satcharita, progressing on Bhakti marg is the easiest
way to get free from the Karmas. The mind cannot sit idle
but if we give it some wise thought, say, chanting ‘Sai
Sai’ always, get rid of feeling of doership and
surrender all our actions, thoughts and ourselves to our
Sadguru Sainath, we have taken our first step towards
working out our karma fast. Sai Baba will work internally
and remind the soul of its purpose of taking human birth.
This does not mean that the soul will not have to work
out the Prarabdh.
Sai Baba will not
come in the functioning of the universal law but Baba
will make the soul strong enough that it will not feel
the effect of Prarabdh, i.e, soul will not be ecstatic
when it gains and will not feel depressed when it suffers.
Sadguru Sainath will grace us with strength necessary
to work out our Prarabdh easily. This is what we mean
when we say that Sadguru works out the karma of devotees.
But then are we willing to work for ourselves and absolve
ourselves of our Prarabdh the way Baba has advised us.

Sai is with us always. Sai helps us whenever we are in
difficulty. We have to wait patiently having full faith
in him. He will definitely solve all our problems satisfy
all our desires. My husband got a job abroad with the
blessings of Sai. After one year there was a problem the
head office wanted us to come back.
My son was studying here so if we were to leave his education
would be at stake. We really had a tough time. We patiently
prayed Sai to help us. We were trying for many jobs here.
I read Hanuman Chalisa also. One day our servant brought
a coconut and told me that keep this and do pooja. She
has not brought any thing like this before. I thought
it is Sai prasad. My inner mind was telling that Sai has
only sent this and our problems are going to be solved.
To my surprise my husband got a good job. Thanks to Sai.

On December 26th,
2007, I registered for Free Gift of Baba Calendar and
while registering there was a note “on first-cum-first
serve basis”. Today, 21st January, 2008, I was going
through the site to see whether I could register again
since I did not receive the calendar, there was a message
stating “Sorry we do not have stock since we have
shipped to almost 89 countries. However if we wish to
get desktop calendar we could register”. I thought
I was not lucky to get the same so let me atleast try
for desktop. As I placed my fingers on the keyboard to
fill the form, I saw the office-boy opening my cabin and
bringing an airmail cover and to my surprise it contained
the calendar I had requested. I was dumb-founded and tears
rolled from my eyes.

This is really a work which must be called as "Baba

The shower of holy blessings of Babajee with his presence
in the heart was felt while going through this masterpiece
named as Heritage of Shirdi Sai newsletter Sai E-zine.
I must say please carry on with this work and make others
feel His holy presence which can change the way of living

I have been to the
site and it is good. I am pleased that you are spreading
His word (though no word can define Him in His conscious
aspect, as He exceeds all, and the moment something defines
Him, He becomes limited by the definition, which is a
contradiction). The Life and Times of Baba, in His material
incarnation, is well described by the site which you mention.
May Baba bless you, and Be with you, through your Journey
of Life.
