FROM SHRI C.B. SATPATHY'S MESSAGE
……“There are a few major
differences between other species and the human beings.
Human beings or the homo-sapiens race has established
itself as the most superior race on this earth because
of the superiority of its mental faculties. These capacities
grew stage by stage through innumerable stages of self
experiments conducted by nature on itself. What we call
as nature is the limited manifestation of the sovereign
divine power called Brahma or Ishwara. Thus, that ultimate
power manifested as universe, solar system, earth etc.
Thereafter, it created the living organisms, birds, animals
and ultimately human beings through different stages of
growth in consciousness.
All other species
have instinctive intelligence but what human beings exclusively
possess is intellect. This intellectual consciousness
of a man is a combination of his mental faculties like
memory, recall, analytical ability and qualities of heart
like love-hatred, selfishness-self sacrifice, anger-calmness,
intolerance-¬patience etc. The highly developed human
brain computer takes all these factors into consideration
in giving a solution to any problem. It is again this
intellect that has created the loftiest and greatest systems
in the earth - social, economic, religious, political
and spiritual etc.
Man’s intellect
has penetrated into the micro world of elements and the
macro dimensions of space. The last two to three decades
have witnessed an “intellectual explosion”
in the world. Movement in space, cloning of animals, transplantation
of human organs, sub-earth discoveries, micro analysis
of elements, wire-less communication, to mention a few,
have revolutionalised human civilization and given human
beings immense power to control nature, almost bordering
on divinity.
Commensurately, the
pressure on the human brain has increased tremendously.
Newer concepts are entering into our thinking system making
the old concepts redundant. It is happening so fast that
most of us are finding it difficult to adjust to this
rapid transition whereas it is easy for the new generations
to adjust at a faster pace due to the nascent state of
their mind. The older generations find it to be heavily
at odds with their old concepts and style of thinking.
This obviously is creating a lot of mal-¬adjustment
in individuals with different levels of sensitivities
and also greater mal-¬adjustment in the social fabric.
Such mal-adjustments are getting reflected in the assertion
of selfish individualism beyond proportions, discord between
parents and off-spring, large numbers of divorce in marital
life, material approach to emotional aspects of life and
a mad race to compete in the material world at the cost
of the finer aspects of life. This has happened in many
civilizations earlier and by the law of self-contradiction
these civilizations lost their glory. This mal-adjustment
between the material and the emotional world brought the
downfall of the mighty Roman, Indus Valley and many other
civilizations.
The answer to such
confusion does not lie in assertion of egoism or selfish
individualism at the cost of greater social good but to
accept the ways of others, with their perfections and
imperfections. Love is not acceptance of only the best
in the loved one but is the total acceptance of the entire
personality. This is what Baba preached and practiced
at Shirdi. Only He was capable of bringing the divergent
groups of individuals belonging to different castes, religions,
creeds and different socio economic status under a single
banner - i.e. the banner of humanism. The world needs
to follow this concept today, to make tomorrow a better
place to live.”…….
FROM "LIFE OF SAI BABA" BY NARASIMHA SWAMI
……“Everything on earth
is liable to change or mitigation and if we remember this,
we shall be very often able to meet 'the objections sometimes
raised to Sai Baba’s statement about karma. In the
very opening Charters of Baba’s Charters & Sayings,
we find the statement of Baba. ‘If one puts his
foot on Shirdi soil, his karma is abolished’. Many
a man wonders whether that is possible, especially in
view of the dictum quoted above, “Avascyam Anubhoktavyam”.
Baba also told Chandorkar that certain broad decisions
arrived at as to the birth and death of people are treated
as facts resulting from previous acts of inviduals.
Regarding birth of
a child, death of son-in-law, etc., about which Chandorkar
was anxious to make Baba work on his behalf, Baba declared
that they were the result of previous karma and could
not be altered. In a sense that is true. Certain births
and certain deaths are all fixed by series of antecedent
events, but yet Baba is able to mould these and shape
these at certain stages and modify these for the benefit
of the concerned devotees.
When talking of Dr.
Chidambaram Pillai, Baba explained the correct doctrine.
Dr. Pillai had intense suffering from guinea worm. He
told a friend to go and report to Baba that his sufferings
were intolerable and to request Baba to transfer these
sufferings to some ten later births of his and leave him
free from the sufferings in this janma. When this was
reported to Baba, the latter sent for Pillai and told
him, ‘What! you want ten janmas? What has to be
endured in ten janmas can be crushed into ten days by
the power of satpurushas.’
So Baba ordered him
to remain with his legs outstretched at Dwarakamayee and
he told him that a crow would come and peck at his wound
and cure him. In a few days, Abdul, Baba’s permanent
attendant, carelessly put his foot down upon Pillai’s
wound and crushed all the guinea worms out of it, merely
by accident as he (Pillai) would have thought. But nothing
done at the Mosque to Pillai could be considered as an
accident, and Baba said that Abdul was the crow, and that
no further crow was wanted to peck at Pillai’s wound.
Pillai was then asked to go home, and in ten days, the
entire suffering from guinea worm was cured.
In another case, that
of Bhimaji, who had serious chest disease, asthma, tuberculosis,
etc., Baba first told Shama, ‘Shama, in bringing
this thief to me what a load of responsibility you are
placing on me!’ Baba meant that the tuberculosis,
asthma, etc., from which Bhimaji suffered were the result
of Bhiinaji’s karma in a previous janma consisting
of theft. Bhimaji felt Babas declaration a blow. At once
he surrendered himself to Baba and said, ‘Helper
of the helpless! I am helpless. Pray show thy pity and
grace to me’.
Then Baba’s
tone changed. Baba told him, ‘The Fakir (God) is
merciful, and your disease will be cured’. He was
suffering from the results of a karma but that could be
mitigated, and so the man was sent to live and sleep in
a wet verandah. Bhimaji did so. There, he had two very
dreadful dreams.
In one dream, he was
mercilessly birched by a school master. For, in the dream
he fancied he was a boy and the master was birching him.
So, he felt the pain in the dream and he roared out. In
the second dream, it was even worse. He felt that some
one was placing a stone roller and rolling it over his
breast. He suffered all the horror of instant death approaching
him. All the pain of a hanging sentence and whipping sentence
were endured by this man in the course of one night.
Baba thus changed
the punishments which he had earned by his previous karma,
and told him that he was thus free from karmic effects.
He then recovered his health. The above instances go to
show that most of our conceptions about karma are nebulous
and ungrounded, and that the safest course for us to follow
would be to be guided by the dicta of Satpurushas like
Sai Baba.”……
DEVOTEE EXPERIENCE
On 7th January 2007, my wife,
daughter and I reached Shirdi to have darshan of the Sadguru
Sainath. Our tickets for returning from Shirdi to Delhi
were booked on Jhelum Express on 8th January 2007 and
we were to depart from Kopergaon Railway Station at 22:35
hrs. After spending the entire day at Shirdi we attended
the evening Aarti at Dwarkamai (Masjid) and sought permission
from Baba for our journey to Delhi.
We left Shirdi in an autorickshaw
at 21:00 hrs so as to reach Kopergaon from where we had
to board the train for traveling to Delhi. The distance
between Shirdi and Kopergaon is around 20 kms and most
of the journey is traversed on the state highway, which
is connected to other major towns located in and around
Shirdi. It was dark and the only light was from oncoming
vehicles traveling at very high speed. The January evening
chill made the journey tough for our daughter and we wrapped
her in a shawl in order to provide her some comfort and
warmth. The windows of the Rickshaw were open and there
was no covering / sheet to thwart the cool breeze coming
through the windows.
Before we left the
hotel and proceeded to Kopergaon, I gave the train tickets
and some cash to my wife to keep in her purse. The bag
also contained my wife's identity card, some documents,
a diary and other miscellaneous items. After traveling
around 12 kms from Shirdi, suddenly my wife tried to reach
for her purse to get cough syrup for our daughter. To
her surprise she could not find the purse in the autorickshaw.
I told her she might
have left it at the hotel counter but she was sure that
she had carried it along while moving into the auto. We
requested the autorickshaw driver to halt so that we could
search for the purse. He stopped the auto and our frantic
search started but we could not locate the purse. There
was total darkness and silence and I used the searchlight
of my mobile phone to look for the purse in the corners
of the auto but met with no success. We requested the
autorickshaw driver to return to Shirdi in the hope of
finding it somewhere on the way, though I knew this was
‘wishful thinking.' I realized that we would not
be able to retrieve a small purse on the stretch of 12
kms that we had already covered from Shirdi towards Koperagon.
The train arrival
time was approaching and we were in a fix regarding what
to do, as the tickets were in the bag. We kept requesting
the driver to move as fast as he could towards Shirdi
in the remote hope of retrieving the purse but he saw
no merit in driving aimlessly. My wife kept pestering
him to drive a few more kilometers as we had already covered
4-5 kms towards Shirdi.
After realizing that
it is next to impossible to get the bag on the highway
where vehicles are plying without interruption, I remembered
my Sadguru and prayed Him. I prayed to Baba that we cannot
not leave Shirdi with such unpleasant memories in our
mind. Within minutes of remembering Sai, I could see a
small object lying in the middle of the road and from
the distance I presumed that it could be the purse.
I requested the driver,
who by now was not willing to travel any further, to drive
slowly as we approached the object. Meanwhile a heavy
truck was approaching from the opposite side and with
the help of its headlights I was stunned to find that
the black object lying on the road was indeed my wife's
purse. I alighted from the Rickshaw and pulled the purse
inside and heaved a sigh of relief and thanked Baba for
HIS merciful deed. There was no damage done to any items
kept inside the purse except a minor cut to it's exterior
surface.
We started the journey to Koperagaon
with only 15-20 minutes left before the scheduled departure
of the train. It appeared that we might not be able to
make it in time though the rickshaw driver was trying
his best to reach the station. On reaching the station
we heard the announcement that the train was running late
by half an hour. What a miracle!
Finally we boarded the train
with sweet memories and our hearts filled with love and
gratitude for Sadguru Saibaba.

Offering to God
I ask
you Oh God !
What can I offer You?
Whatever I possess
all belongs to You.
How can I offer You
what is already Yours?
I offer You water
representing my tears,
shed in longing
and desire of Yours.
I tender these flowers
as my pure heart,
devoid of anger,
lust and pride.
I present these fruits
as my mind,
full of love
and free from thoughts.
I offer You
five kinds of sweets,
as five elements
which constitute me.
Accept these offerings
Oh God !
As my love, worship and devotion.

TOPIC OF DISCUSSION Devotion
Devotion means unflinching
faith and love in God or Guru. Unless the faith is mixed
with love, it is difficult to sustain it all the time.
Sometimes, in difficult situations, faith is put to severe
trials. This can be seen in the lives of the great saints
and sages. Because of their unshakable love in God, they
survived through the trials without losing the balance.
The love for Guru can be for the physical form or for
the changeless essence present behind the physical frame.
Sri Sai Baba mentions about both in His teachings. Sri
Sai Baba advises his devotees about seeing His form in
the living beings [Bhakti], meditating on the essence
behind the form [Jnanam].
It is very important
to have faith in Guru and his teachings. If some thing
goes in a different way, other than expected, it does
not deny the Grace of the Guru. Acceptance of results
for the actions after doing ones personal best is the
basis of faith. For the heart breaking and difficult problems
of life, there may not be ready made answers. But, it
is vital in those times to hold on to the torch of Faith,
other wise there is every chance to fall into the deep
abyss of doubting mind.
A great saint in one
of his compositions ironically laments, "What can
I do with my tricky mind? If some thing goes rightly,
I feel that it is mainly because of my effort and partly
because of God's grace; if some thing goes wrong, I feel
that mainly it is due to your lack of Grace and partly
due to my lack of proper effort. Kindly show Grace on
me and make my mind steady on your Lotus feet in both
pleasure and pain". Let us pray to Sri Sai Baba to
grant us steady faith and love on him.
Sri Sadguru Sainath
is the substance of all scriptures and He is the wisdom
that pervades eternity. The purpose of the seeker is to
seek the depths of such an entity in order to quench the
thirst; the blessing only mankind is bestowed with in
nature. Known as sadhana, such a pursuit is the subject
of discussions, arguments, speculations and postulations
suited to the human convenience. True, religions and sects
all talk about the same, yet we have many religions and
sects. Let us not however forget that Sri Sai Baba refutes
any argument in the name of God and he said without mincing
words, All are same, and God is One.
Sri Sai Baba's statement through Anantrao Patankar's episode
in Shri Sai Satcharitra that devotion is the most important
qualification required to realize the supreme has most
profound impression on His followers, then and now. Bhakthi
marg or the path of devotion is sure to lead one to God
that exists in the self and elsewhere. Sri Sai Baba stressed
repeatedly the importance of realizing the self; the story
of the merchant seeking the knowledge of the Supreme that
exists within and out in Sri Sai Satcharitra is an excellent
example.
How does devotion lead to the pursuit of the knowledge
of the self? Even before we ask that question, one may
wonder whether something known as self realization really
exists. The surprising answer to the question is Yes!
Mankind completely dwells in the realization of gross
perceptions; the abilities that define the self to its
fullest beauty, I realize, therefore, I am! However, the
term self realization in its spiritual context is completely
subtle and difficult to comprehend.
Sri Sai Baba said that His coffers are open and those
who seek shall be given. In this context, the subtleties
of realizing the self assumes enormous importance if one
were to pay attention.
Let us all spend a moment on seeking Sri Sadguru Sainath's
treasures that lead us to our own subtle nature, the material
that is all pervading.

Baba is always with everyone. I started praying Him
from past five years. I was very disappointed when I went
to the Sai Mandir near my house five years back. I just
thought maybe I should go to this place, what drew me
to the place I still don't know. After the pooja, the
priest there gave me Sai's robe and Saicharitha in Hindi
and asked me to pray Baba. When I was reading the third
chapter itself I could see the change in the life.
Things got settled slowly in my life. Until lately I
just reliased that I was not praying Sai from 5 yrs but
I did sing His songs long way back without even knowing
who He was. It was when I was in 4th standard, I don't
remember how I started to go for the Bhajan classes and
there was a big photo of Sai and we used sing lots of
Bhajans. I was doing this for almost more than 5 yrs.
I don't remember why I stopped. The day I realized this
I was so thrilled and this increased by faith in Him.
It’s very true, Sai knows how to call His devotes
to Him, and they would get drawn to Him even without their
knowledge.
I still have lots of difficulties in life, but I know
I would be able to overcome those with His grace. It’s
such a wonderful feeling to reliase that I was praying
to Him from a very long time!! Today my faith has increased
so much that I feel like praying to Him always..

Each and every day I remember dear Sai Baba and my day
goes off well. So many miracles have happened in my life
which I will share with everyone. I have been reading
this magazine for several years and I find that it gives
us value education on how we should conduct ourselves
and how we can help people live as peacefully as possible
in these turbulent times. In the latest issue of this
magazine Shri Guruji's message regarding suitable dress
for various occasions has impressed me. I sincerely believe
that devotees who go to Sai temples and other temples
and places of prayer will follow his advice. His wishes
are Shri Shirdi Sai Baba's wishes and I think he has expressed
in a very appropriate manner. Om Sai Ram kripa

Sainatha and the Sai family which is the whole wide world
of creation made a dramatic entry into my life clearing
all else in a manner so simple and yet so definitive and
so very enchantingly. Thank you very much for making this
site (www.heritageofshirdisai.org) available so that we
can all merge and fuse together as a big family to synergize,
motivate and refuel each other especially when there is
nought else but large open spaces to be addressed.

For the past few months I wanted to thank you for the
Ramnavami issue of Heritage of Shirdi Sai Magazine. I
received it by registered mail in the last week of April
but for some reason or the other, I could not write back
to you. It’s a wonderful magazine. The messages
of Shri C.B. Satpathy ji are like blessings for devotees
like us who live so far away. The articles written by
Sai bhakts from different parts of the world simply interpret
their enormous faith and devotion in Baba and those messages
inspire not only my faith in Baba but they also inspire
me to share the wonderful leelas of Baba that I have witnessed
in my life. Thank you so much for making this magazine
possible. It could not have been possible without the
hard work and determination of the Heritage of Shirdi
Sai team and of course nothing is possible without Sai's
kripa. Keep up with the good work. May Sai always bless
you and your team for this noble and thoughtful deed.
Good wishes to you always.
